- c.1303, from O.Fr. rejoiss-, stem of rejoissant, prp. of rejoir "gladden, rejoice," from re-, intensive prefix + joir "be glad," from L. gaudere "rejoice." Originally in Eng. "to enjoy the possession of" (cf. to rejoice in).
